Situations you find yourself in, when you look back on them years later and all you can say is wow! I got a phone call from Steve my partner at Southwest Graphic Arts telling me Janis Ian was going to be in town and he wanted to know if I wanted to go. Sure! The only thing I knew about her was she had a couple of hit songs in the early 70’s and one was called “at seventeen”. Steve always liked different music than I did for the most part but the show should be fun. It was at a place on lower Greenville called “Poor David’s Pub” . The show was good and the venue was really small. The sound was really good. Some how between sets we ended up in the alley behind the club talking with Janis! A photograph of her and the autograph she gave me is on the wall next to my kitchen. A special part of early 70’s music history. I remember her asking me what I wanted on the autograph and I had no idea. She was really cool and down to earth.
One of the craziest things is getting to meet legendary people and photograph them. We received word of a two comic legends performing in Dallas. I had grown up and as a little kid saw them on television. The venue was a really strange place, It was at the Loew’s Anatole Hotel in Dallas. The performers were Milton Berle and Henny Youngman. This was going to be a once in a lifetime thing. So we went to the show and Steve called up to Mr. Berle’s room and wished him good luck with the night’s show. We got to our seats in the second row just a little left of center. Out comes Milton Berle before the show and strikes up a conversation with us. No one was in the front row. During the show he and Mr. Youngman interacted with us! It was funny as hell and amazing. After the show Steve got up on stange and walked off with the band. A great and memorable time!
